About this Compress Video tool

Phone videos are huge: a single minute of 4K footage can be several hundred megabytes. That is too big for WhatsApp, email attachments, Discord or many upload forms.

This compressor re-encodes the video with your device's own hardware encoder, lowers the bitrate and, if you want, the resolution. You can also type an exact target size such as 16 MB and the tool works out the right bitrate for you.

How to use Compress Video

  1. Choose or drop a video (MP4, MOV, WebM or MKV).
  2. Pick a compression level, or choose To a target size and enter the size in MB.
  3. Optionally lower the resolution to 720p or 480p for even smaller files.
  4. Click Compress video and download the MP4.

Frequently asked questions

How much can I compress a video?

Most phone videos shrink by 60–90% with the Recommended setting and little visible loss. Lowering the resolution to 720p saves even more.

How do I compress a video for WhatsApp?

Choose To a target size and enter 15 (WhatsApp's limit is 16 MB). For longer videos also choose 480p so it still looks good.

What format is the compressed video?

MP4 with H.264 video and AAC sound, which plays on every phone, computer and website.

Is my video uploaded?

No. The whole job runs inside your browser using your device's built-in video encoder, so the video never leaves your device.
