How to create a strong password (and remember it)
Most hacked accounts aren't cracked by clever hackers; they're opened with passwords leaked from another website. If you use the same password in several places, one leak opens them all.

- Length: 14 characters or more. Each extra character multiplies the work needed to guess it.
- Randomness: no names, birthdays, phone numbers or keyboard patterns like qwerty123.
- Uniqueness: a different password for every account.
Generate one in seconds
- Open the Password Generator.
- Choose Random characters with length 16, or Memorable words with 4–5 words.
- Check the strength meter shows Strong or Very strong.
- Copy it into the sign-up form and save it in your password manager.
Passphrases: strong and memorable
A passphrase like Copper-Meadow-Lemon-Rocket-58 is easy to type on a phone and easy to remember, yet would take a computer far longer to guess than a short password full of symbols.
Use a password manager
Nobody can remember 50 unique passwords. A password manager (built into Chrome, Safari and Android, or a dedicated app) stores them for you. You only need to remember one strong master passphrase.
Turn on two-factor authentication
Even a perfect password can be phished. Two-factor authentication (a code from an app or SMS) stops most account takeovers. Turn it on for email, banking and social media first.
