How to copy text from an image, photo or screenshot

Retyping text from a photo of a notice, a screenshot or a scanned page is slow and error-prone. OCR (optical character recognition) reads the letters in the image and turns them into text you can copy, edit and search.

How to do it

  1. Open Image to Text (OCR).
  2. Choose the image, screenshot or scanned PDF.
  3. Wait a few seconds while the text is recognised on your device.
  4. Copy the text or download it as a .txt file.

Getting accurate results

  • Use a sharp, well-lit image where text is at least 20 pixels tall.
  • Crop to just the text you need, and rotate it upright.
  • High contrast (dark text on a light background) works best.
  • Handwriting is much harder than print and may need corrections.

What can you use it for?

Copying quotes from book pages, pulling numbers from receipts into a spreadsheet, making scanned contracts searchable, grabbing text from a screenshot you can't select, or translating a sign by pasting the text into a translator.

For PDFs that already contain real text, PDF to Text is faster and 100% accurate.
