How to make a passport size photo at home with your phone

You don't need a studio for most passport, visa and ID card photos. A phone camera, a plain wall and the right crop are enough, and you can print a whole sheet of copies at any photo shop for very little.

1. Take the photo

  • Stand about 1 metre in front of a plain white or off-white wall.
  • Face a window or use soft, even light; avoid shadows behind you and on your face.
  • Ask someone else to take the photo at eye level. Selfies distort the face.
  • Look straight at the camera with a neutral expression and your mouth closed. Remove glasses unless rules allow them.

2. Crop to the right size

  1. Open the Passport Photo Maker.
  2. Choose your photo and pick your country and document.
  3. Drag and zoom so your face fills the oval and your eyes sit near the guide line.
  4. Click Make passport photo.

Common sizes

  • Pakistan passport and CNIC: 35 × 45 mm
  • India passport: 35 × 45 mm; Indian visa and OCI: 2 × 2 inch
  • USA passport and visa: 2 × 2 inch (51 × 51 mm)
  • UK, Schengen and most of Europe: 35 × 45 mm
  • Saudi Arabia visa: 4 × 6 cm; UAE visa: 43 × 55 mm; Canada: 50 × 70 mm

Rules change, so always check the official website for your application before printing.

3. Print

The tool also creates a print sheet: a 4 × 6 inch image with several copies and thin cut lines. Take it to any photo shop or print it at home on 4 × 6 photo paper at actual size (not "fit to page"), then cut along the lines.

For online applications

Use the single-photo JPG. If the portal sets a size limit in KB, run it through Compress Image to KB.
