How to make a ringtone from any song

The best ringtones are short: the chorus or the instantly recognisable intro, 20–30 seconds long, ending with a gentle fade. Here's how to make one from a song you own.

Cut the part you want

  1. Open the MP3 Cutter.
  2. Choose the song (MP3, M4A, WAV, OGG or even a video file).
  3. Play it and press Use current position at the start of the part you want, then again at the end.
  4. Click Play selection to check it. Keep Fade out ticked so the ringtone doesn't stop abruptly.
  5. Click Cut audio and download the MP3.

Set it on Android

Open Settings → Sound & vibration → Phone ringtone, tap the plus or "My sounds" option and pick the downloaded file. On some phones you first move the file to the Ringtones folder with the Files app.

iPhone

iPhones need ringtones in M4R format, under 40 seconds, added through GarageBand on the phone or Finder/iTunes on a computer. Cut a clip of 30 seconds or less here first, then import it into GarageBand and export it as a ringtone.

Ringtone from a video

Choose the video directly in the MP3 Cutter, or extract the whole soundtrack with MP4 to MP3.

Only use music you own or have permission to use.
